Audiology,Career in audiologyAudiology is an allied health science, which deals with the study of hearing disorders. It concerns with evaluation of hearing functions and the rehabilitation of patients with hearing impairments. They examine people of all ages and identify symptoms of hearing loss, auditory, balance and related sensory and neural problems by using specialized equipments like audiometersand estimate the impact of auditory and balance problems on the client's daily life. They then prepare e a diagnosis report and design a course of treatment by using remedial measures.

Course Details

A candidate must be a 10+2 pass out with science subjects - Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics to get admitted into the basic level course in audiology i.e. Bachelor's Degree or B.Sc in Audiology. The course duration varies from 3 to 4 years.One can pursue 2 years master's degree program after this.

To practice audiology, professionals need to have either Bachelors/Masters degree in Audio logy and be registered with Indian Speech and Hearing Association (ISHA) or Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI). 2 years master's degree programme. The various universities may grant admissions either on the basis of marks of the 10+2 course or they may conduct specific entrance tests to gauge the merit and aptitude of the aspirants. Diploma courses are also available other than undergraduate/ post graduate courses.

Career Prospects in Audiology

Audiologists can find employment in government hospitals, health departments of government and government agencies along with private hospitals, health centers, clinics and nursing homes. Additionally they can set their own practice by setting their own clinic. Audiologists also can work privately to provide services to schools, hospitals and nursing homes. Teaching in medical or para-medical colleges is also an option available to audiologists.


Audiologists may start from a monthly salary of Rs 8,000-10,000 in government hospitals. In private hospitals and clinics the pay scale is usually higher.It may go up to Rs.15, 000. With experience the pay increases and an audiologist can easily reach a monthly salary of Rs 25,000-30,000 within 4-5 years of experiences.
