CAD allows to create a virtual-reality model of a piece of jewelry. After that a mold of the prepared model is produced in a wax like material with the help of Computer aided manufacturing (CAM) process. CAM helps in the easier manufacturing of numerous pieces of the same design which are then distributed to retail establishments across the country.

Course Details For Career in Jewelery Design

Some of the premier institutes all over India provide diploma courses in Jewellery designing after completing graduation in any stream. Institutes offer short-term courses after completing X or XII standards. The BFA(Bachelor of Fine Arts) is a three years course and trains the student on color coding schemes, polishing & finishing, drawing techniques & ornament making and designing etc.Also most of the Jewellery designing Institutes now train students on computerized programs like jewel cad, AutoCAD, Auto cam, etc. After BFA one can pursue MFA course which is of two-year duration.

Career Prospects of Jewelery Designer

Jewelery Design CareerAfter completing a course in jewellery design students can work in the following fields:

  • Goldsmith: - Goldsmith makes jewellery for oneself or for someone else. He has the ability to make any standard jewellery.
  • Fashion Jeweller: - A fashion Jeweller work area involves designing accessories and making jewellery for the fashion industry.
  • Jewellery Designer: - Jewellery Designer work involves preparing sketches by hand or on the computer as per specifications of the customers. He uses computer-aided design (CAD/CAM) programs to create designs.
  • Lapidary: - Lapidary work involves cutting precious stones, making them shine and carving gem material in them.

The students can find excellent career options in jewellery designing house, export house, fashion house, freelance designing or at the same time opening their own production house. One can also find employment with the renowned names in jewellery brands such as Gili, Enchante, Nakshatra, Tanishq, D-damas and Swarovski. Besides, they can set up their own jewel export house.There are also opportunities for setting up retail and trading units.


As a trainee in jewellery designing you can start with Rs.8, 000-Rs.10, 000 per month. In about a year your salary would be Rs.20, 000-Rs.30, 000 per month. With an experience of around five years, one can earn about Rs.30, 000 to Rs.40, 000 per month.
