Careers in Mechanical Engineering
As a profession, mechanical engineering deals with the design and production of tools and machineries their installation ,operation and maintenance in big industries. Mechanical engineers use the principles of energy, materials, and mechanics to design and manufacture machines and devices of all types. These include steam and gas turbines, components of thermal power stations, internal combustion engines, jet engines, machine tools, air conditioning and heating machines, refrigerators etc . In short, their job concerns the creation of processes and systems that drive technology and industry. Mechanical engineers are engaged in researching, developing, designing, manufacturing, and testing mechanical devices like tools, engines, machines, etc. These may include elevators, refrigeration and air-conditioning equipment, robots, and electric generators. Mechanical engineers design tools used in other engineering disciplines.
The work of a Mechanical Engineer can be extremely challenging and fulfilling, requiring IT, design and analytical skills together with the ability to work as a team. He forms an inevitable link to a broad group of other engineers who work on a project and has to work in a team. He needs to work with civil Engineers in structures and perform stress analysis of structures; Electrical engineers in electronics and perform computing and control theory. With aeronautical Engineers his help is sought in fields like turbo machinery and other designs.
To pursue a degree course in mechanical engineering i.e. BE/B.Tech, candidates need to be 10+2 science or equivalent with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. After completing bachelor's, one can opt for a post graduate degree. The postgraduate course generally offers specialized training in thermal engineering, design, and production engineering. Post graduate degrees are essential for most teaching posts and positions in management and an additional degree in business administration is desirable for management positions. Further studies up to PhD level are also an option for students interested in research. There is also the Associate Membership Examination of the Institute of Engineers (AMIE), which enables working people in the private and public sector, or diploma holders to acquire a Bachelor's engineering degree through distance education. Another way to get a mechanical engineering degree is to do a degree course from the Institution of Mechanical Engineers for Chartered Engineer status. Diploma course of three year duration are also available for students who have passed class 10th (SSC).
Career Prospects in Mechanical Engineer
Mechanical Engineers could work in many industries including private or public sector industries of various types. They can seek employment in government departments like Posts and Telegraphs, Defense, PWD, and CPWD. Other departments such as aeronautical, agricultural, automobile, chemical, and power plants, as well as the railways, need mechanical engineers to design and maintain their machinery. Mechanical Engineers also mostly required in automobile, chemical, electronics, steel plants, oil exploration and refining, technical wings of armed forces, space research organisation, etc. Candidates with post graduate degree or an additional management degree could find work in administrative and managerial positions in government departments or public and private sector industries. Those who interested in research activities can work with many public/private sector research organizations. These engineers also can choose teaching in technical institutions as a remunerative profession.
A hardware professional can expect a starting salary of around Rs. 1.5 – 2 lakh a year which could go up to Rs. 5-6 lakh per annum once the candidate has two to three years of work experience. But those, having a B. Tech from a reputed institute, start with 2.5 – 3.5 Lakhs per year.
