Careers in Medical Lab Technology
Medical Laboratory Technology is an integral part of the medical care system. The main role of medical technicians is to do the tests based on which the doctors perform the diagnosis of a disease. These laboratory personnel work behind the scene. The group of medical personnels who work in laboratory can be grouped broadly as:
- Medical Technologists
- Medical Technicians
Medical technologists perform complex tests such as microscopic examinations of tissues, blood, matching blood samples for transfusions ,test drug levels in blood to determine how patients are responding to medications etc. They also conduct research under the supervision of medical researchers in many laboratories. They work in five broad fields viz. Blood banking, Clinical Chemistry (chemical analysis of body fluids), Hematology (blood related), Immunology (study of immune system) and Microbiology (study of bacteria and other disease organisms).
Medical technicians on the other hand, perform routine laboratory testing manually according to instructions. They work under Technologists or supervisors. Technicians may prepare specimens and operate machines that automatically analyze samples. In addition to running tests, technicians set up, clean, and maintain laboratory equipment, such as centrifuges, microscopes etc.
Aspirants of medical laboratory technology can take up courses both at diploma and undergraduate level. The B.Sc. programme in medical laboratory technology is offered by different medical colleges/institutions across the country. The degree awarded is B.Sc.-M.L.T (BLMT). The basic eligibility criterion for Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Technology (BMLT) is 10+2 or equivalent with Science subjects. BMLT is a 3 year programme. Eligibility needed for diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology (DMLT) is 10+2 or equivalent examination from a recognized University or Board. Duration of the course is 2 years. There are also other certificate courses in lab technicians which needs 10+2 as the eligibility. Courses are offered by colleges, universities as well as hospitals. The hospitals are usually affiliated with a college or university.
Career Prospects In Medical Lab Technology
A certified medical laboratory technician may find a challenging career in public and private sector hospital, minor emergency centers, laboratory, blood donor centers. These days with the growth in the private sector there are so many private hospitals, nursing homes, blood banks, pathology laboratories etc. the demand for laboratory technicians is on the up-swing. With adequate knowledge and experience, Medical Laboratory Technologists can advance to supervisory or management positions in laboratories and hospitals. These Laboratory Technologists can also run private pathology laboratories. Teaching in medical collages and institutions is also a very good option for them.
Medical lab Technologists/Technicians earn reasonably good salaries. Getting employed in government hospital can fetch a salary of Rs.6000 to Rs 8000 as a fresher. Those working in private hospitals and clinics have more income than those of government employees. People setting their own practice can earn even better depending upon their skill and popularity.
